Hired as a contractor by The International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration to first redesign and then produce on ongoing basis the association's bi-monthly magazine, Condenser. I also produce a quarterly version of the publication translated into Spanish with select repurposed content.

Physicians Practice/United Business Media/Informa

Oct 2007-Feb 2020

Digital Art Director

Physicians Practice/United Business Media/Informa

Offered a new job with promotion by Physicians Practice as Associate Art Director in October 2007 (after their recent acquisition by UBM). I had left the company six months prior for a new job. Promoted to Digital Art Director after a time.

Responsibilities:

  • Design of Physicians Practice magazine;

  • Management of contract talent and freelance illustrators;

  • Animation and Video work for website banner ads, social, and sales proposals;

  • After the 2009 print revenue shortfalls across the industry, I began designing all of the custom illustration work for the magazine covers and all inside artwork. In 2012 I relocated to NC and was permitted to continue in my role working remotely;

  • Created large volume of custom co-branded eBooks and other special projects for clients;

  • Designed custom sales decks in Power Point and InDesign for sales presentations.

Key Accomplishments:

  • Served as one-person art department for Physicians Practice magazine, spearheading all design content. Led the transition into digital-only format in 2016;

  • Growth of custom content line necessitated a successful shift in focus to client-specific projects including e-books, white papers, infographics, and digital collateral for other UBM brands like Medical Economics, Nutritional Outlook, and Dental Products Review;

  • Earned numerous employee awards and two promotions. Drove new business with visual sales presentations.

UBM was bought by Informa in 2018, and the Life Sciences division was then sold to MJH Associates in 2019, where I worked until the departmental restructuring that resulted in the elimination of my role in Feb 2020.

Feb 2006-Apr 2007

Graphic Designer

Physicians Practice

Hired as a junior designer for Physicians Practice magazine at the beginning of their rebranding effort in 2006, Physicians Practice was a 100+ page monthly magazine for doctors that was printed with 60 + versions each issue and mailed according to local hospital sponsorships for the magazine across the US. Each sponsored region had its own unique 8-page brochure insert from the hospital sponsor.

Responsibilities:

  • Design of the magazine (instrumental in the rebranding effort);

  • Pre-press work and full coordination of all supplied press PDFs from 60+ hospital clients for magazine versioning;

  • A unique hospital insert brochure was saddle-stitched into the center of each sponsor’s regional version of the magazine;

  • Design of hospital insert brochures when requested by client;

  • Design of house advertisements, trade show materials, direct mail, website imagery, logos, and other marketing collateral.

*I also briefly re-joined newer division of Informa (Farm Progress) from March 2023 to October 2023 as a Graphic Designer for the marketing department. This was the 3rd time I came on board at this same company listed above. I accepted this position with Informa (albeit in a less senior capacity), because I am a such strong advocate for the organization and I considered them to be the best company I’d worked for thus far in my career as far as work culture, work/life balance, and the talent of senior leadership. I had great success with Informa for many years. However, my freelance workload steadily increased with CloseKnit after rejoining Informa this time, and I made the decision to resign from Informa in October of 2023 to focus all of my energy on CloseKnit’s goals.

Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

Apr 2007-Oct 2007

Senior Graphic Designer

Researched concepts to design a wide range of medical journals and magazines. I took this position after working for a year at Physicians Practice. After 6 months at Wolters Kluwer, Physicians Practice called me and asked me to return to their organization with a promotion, which I accepted.

Key Accomplishments

  • Created multitude of speculative design comps for potential clients that led to sizable contracts;

  • Designed covers and internal content for a number of clinical journals;

  • Managed compositors in India amidst difficult language barrier. Limited to a small amount of edits included in our production costs, I created some innovative production solutions for layout irregularities with the compositor page creation through style sheet hacks/workarounds, and extremely detailed if/then statement rules for page layout that the compositor could apply to their creation process.
